In Honour of Honor: Lacrosse community rallies in support

The lacrosse community has demonstrated its incredible collective strength once again, following the passing of a much-loved University of Nottingham Lacrosse club member, Honor Edwards.

England Lacrosse and the wider community were deeply saddened to learn of Honor’s passing in November 2022, a second year medical student, and hugely valued player for the university’s second team as well as club charity secretary.

Honor was always keen to emphasise the importance of mental wellbeing and reduce stigma surrounding mental health, demonstrated back in October when as part of her charity work she and a teammate ran 42km in support of the charity Mind, raising over £4000.

Lacrosse clubs and university sports teams around the country have continued to champion her efforts going forward, paying tribute to Honor at matches and training sessions and emphasising their wellbeing offerings with teammates, all while raising thousands of pounds for charity.

In the weeks since the club announced the news, multiple sports teams at Nottingham wore red and held a minute’s silence or applause at the beginning of matches including University of Nottingham Tennis, Squash, Cheerleading, Women’s Rugby Union, and Volleyball.

Other universities across the country have also demonstrated their support, including Birmingham Lacrosse, Edinburgh Lacrosse, Loughborough Netball, Manchester Met Ladies Lacrosse, and Nottingham Trent Lacrosse to name a few.

Remembrance has also continued across the lacrosse community, with the England Lacrosse National Academy wearing red in Honor’s memory at their January session, with a number of athletes in the group knowing and playing with Honor.

She is remembered for her kindness, selflessness, and determination and will be deeply missed by all those who had the privilege of playing alongside her.

England Lacrosse express our sorrow and extend our condolences to Honor’s family and friends, in addition to the club and wider student community at Nottingham.

Support is available for anyone in need via Mind, or both Student Minds and Nightline which are both mental health charities and support groups aimed at providing help specifically to the student community.

England Lacrosse are also here to direct people to appropriate support networks should they require and people can get in touch with us in any way they feel most comfortable.

Following Honor’s passing, a JustGiving page set up by her family in support of Mind has amassed nearly £40,000 in donations. You can donate to the page in her memory HERE.
